New field recording gear.

During our first visit, I used my cassette recorder to make some simple recordings of the space. Usually when I make recordings, I use the cassette recorder or an old Sony minidisc recorder. Both are useful devices – the cassette recorder has a great texture to it, and I love the saturation i can get out of it when I put line devices into it. The minidisc is stereo and has a decent stereo mic. More >

(Pulse) Generator.
Jun 21st
At most electronics stores there are children’s project kits. One that you’ll generally find is something along the lines of “The Sound Effects Generator”. This is the description in the Yebo! Electronics Sound Effects Generator Kit:
This is a simple sound effects generator that can create a large variety of sounds, including motor boat, speed boat water droplets on a tin roof, a hospital heart beat monitoring machine, the tick-tock of a grandfather clock or the noise of a cricket!
Actually all this does is make a clicking noise. A pot changes the speed of the clicks. So it is kind of boring.
First fix: call it a Pulse Generator. Awesome!

Piezo Disc from a Tweeter
Piezo discs are awesome. They are quite a cheap way to get some pretty effective contact microphones. Nicolas Collins‘ Handmade Electronic Music recommends some interesting ways to get your hands on them, plus some suggestions on how to turn them into a decent, waterproof, record-anywhere microphone.
