Frontera // The Early Morning Market

Today Lilia and I started working on Frontera meets the early morning market. Building on Lilia’s interactive installation, and the story telling project I have been engaging as part of dala’s Livelihoods Initiative, we are working towards an interactive audio visual installation, primarily based on touch.
Durban drive by

These are some photos I took of buildings in Durban on a Sunday drive by. It is remarkable how easy it is to objectify architecture and make a city appear so devoid of people. I almost don’t recognize my own city in these pictures, but there is something about the blue sky…
The first series are of shells of buildings that were torn down in the Point area as part of the municipality’s massive gentrification plan.
This one is from the new residential development just behind the facades.
The rest are from a range of places between the Esplanade (Margaret Mncadi) and South Coast Road.

a city, an interactive multimedia instillation by Dean and I, emerged out of the Young Artist’s Project hosted by the KZNSA in 2004. a city was also installed in the Durban Art Gallery and at Prog:Me (Rio) subsequent to the exhibition at the KZNSA. We are quite excited about the possibilities of in the intersection between art, technology, space and society.
